After two hard-fought regular season meetings, which resulted in home victories for each squad by one-goal margins, the Caribou and Presque Isle boys teams get to meet again in the Eastern Maine Class B quarterfinal round.

The contest, matching the No. 4 Vikings and No. 5 Wildcats, will take place at CHS tonight at 6 p.m.

The winner will take on either No. 1 Ellsworth or No. 8 Belfast in Saturday’s semifinal.

The Vikings’ and Wildcats’ girls teams met Tuesday evening in Presque Isle in another post-season contest.

The ’Cats, the No. 1 seed with a 13-0-1 record, won the regular season matches despite trailing on both occasions. The final score was 6-4 in PI on Aug. 30 and 4-3 in Caribou Oct. 15.

Caribou’s Sammy Camy plays tight defense on Medomak Valley’s Brooke Benedict during Friday’s prelim contest at CHS. The Vikings claimed a 4-0 victory.

Caribou, ranked eighth in the division, earned the opportunity to play Presque Isle a third time following Friday’s 4-0 preliminary playoff victory over No. 9 Medomak Valley of Waldoboro played at Caribou.

Katelyn Tardie broke a scoreless tie with just 43 seconds to go in the first half. She took a pass from Olivia Sleeper and drilled a left-footed shot from inside the 18-yard box into the lower right corner of the goal.

Medomak controlled play at the beginning of the second half, but Caribou was able to battle back and scored with 16:09 remaining in the contest as Sleeper scored off a Tardie assist.

Less than six minutes later, Tardie chased down a through ball from Delaney Williams and ripped in a shot from 10 yards out to make it a 3-0 lead.

The game’s scoring was capped with 4:10 to go when Sleeper scored her second goal of the game. It also was the 21st of the season for the senior wing, who in the process established a single-season record by overtaking Jenna Selander, who set the mark in 2010.

Caribou was able to prevail despite being without the services of sophomore Sarah Doak, the team’s second-leading scorer, who suffered a knee injury during the Oct. 15 game against Presque Isle.

“We were without her for a couple games earlier in the season, so we’ve played without her before,” said Viking coach Todd Albert. “We just got Erin Patton back, who has not played since the Hermon game [Oct. 12], so fortunately we were able to replace one with one.

“Plus everybody else had to step up a little bit.”

Medomak Valley coach Larry Jensen came away very impressed with the Caribou squad.

“We were prepared for them, but they are a good solid team and deserved it,” Jensen said. “We rely on our defense and they scored four against us. They are a talented group.”
