DYER BROOK — Maine State Police are investigating a vandalism incident at Southern Aroostook Community School that caused about $1,500 in damages to the school’s soccer field.
Maine State Trooper Chad Fuller responded to the school Saturday for a report of vandalism, said Sgt. John Cote of Troop F in Houlton. RSU 50 Superintendent Larry Malone said the damage was noticed Saturday morning by the school’s building and grounds personnel.
“Someone had driven a vehicle onto the soccer field and caused damage estimated in the area of $1,500,” Cote said. “The field cannot be used in its current condition.”

The incident occurred sometime after 9 p.m. Friday after the school had finished it boys soccer playoff game — a 2-1 overtime victory against Washburn. An unknown person or persons drove a vehicle onto the wet field, causing deep ruts in the turf.
Malone said the district’s initial assessment was that the field would need new grass sods and re-seeding in the spring.
“Due to the recent wet weather, we are considering waiting until spring to repair damages,” he said.
The boys varsity team is still in the playoffs and will practice on the school’s smaller soccer field located behind the main field.
The case is still under investigation by Trooper Fuller. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call 1-800-924-2261.
