Volunteering benefits community

The Central Aroostook Humane Society has had a very busy few weeks. On Oct. 2, Amato’s Restaurant in Presque Isle donated 10 percent of sales to the shelter. Thank you to Amato’s and everyone who dropped in and had a meal!
The Paddock Cafe and The Paddy Wagon made a donation to the Central Aroostook Humane Society; $415 was collected in the donation container and the businesses added another $85 to make the total donation $500. In the last four years they and their loyal supporters have donated over $1,600.
We also had a very successful Fall Craft Fair at the Presque Isle Forum on Oct. 6 and 7. We appreciate the generosity of the Forum for allowing us the use of the entrance and also to everyone who stopped by to purchase items, make a donation or just to say hello!
On Oct. 11, we became the very proud owners of a 2012 Toyota Sienna Van donated by Toyota from their 100 Cars for Good program. We cannot possibly thank Toyota, the owners and staff at York’s of Houlton or all those who voted enough for the van. This experience has been far more exciting, emotional and rewarding than anyone ever could have imagined.
Some members of the Presque Isle High School Key Club recently stopped by the shelter and cleaned the cat kennels. This was a tremendous help to the shelter staff and it was greatly appreciated!
Are you seeing a theme yet?
Non-profit organizations, like ours, are dependent on the generosity of local community members who volunteer their time, attend events and make donations. Without all of this support the operation of our animal shelter would simply not be possible.
If you already give your time or make donations to a non-profit organization, you probably know how rewarding it can be.
According to HelpGuide.org, one of the better-known benefits of volunteering is the impact on the community. Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. However, volunteering is a two-way street, and it can benefit you and your family as much as the cause you choose to help. Dedicating your time as a volunteer helps you make new friends, expand your network and boost your social skills.
Volunteering also helps to boost self-confidence, combat depression and helps you stay physically healthy. It can help advance your career and it can bring fun and fulfillment to your life.
There are many different organizations, groups, health care facilities and schools that depend on volunteers. Take the time to find something that you will enjoy and are passionate about. If you try one effort and decide it isn’t for you, it’s okay. There are plenty of volunteer possibilitie sin our area.
The Central Aroostook Humane Society has plenty of work for volunteers to do such as cleaning, folding newspapers, walking dogs, socializing cats and much more. Whether you can do a little or a lot, we are very appreciative of all the support we receive from our community and its members.
Call or stop by the shelter located at 26 Cross St. in Presque Isle to see how you can “Help Us, Help Them.”
