Hubie Boulier |
CARIBOU — Hubie Boulier was born on June 9, 1922, in Sheridan. Hubie enlisted in the United States Army on Dec. 20, 1942, and was trained as a burner repair and maintenance technician as a private 1st class.
During his almost three years of service in the Army, Hubie served with the 501st Engineers Light Pontoon Company. He served in Sicily, Naples, Foggia, Rome, Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe during World War II.
Military awards Hubie received include the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Medal.
After his service in the military, Hubie married his late wife, Polly, and they lived in Augusta. While they didn’t have their own biological children, Hubie and Polly loved and helped care for many of their close friends’ children as if they were their own. The couple was known for their kindness and generosity. Hubie was especially known for his dedication to veterans.
Hubie began working for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at Togus. The VA would go on to award Hubie with its Certificate of Services Award for 25 years of faithful service in 1972.
Active in the VFW, Hubie was a frequent recipient of the organization’s Certificate of Merit as the Outstanding Post Service Officer. Hubie received the National Veterans Service Fund Gold Award in 1991 for his unselfish devotion to the concept of veterans helping veterans.
In February Hubie moved from Ashland to the Maine Veterans’ Home in Caribou. He was always very social and loved to go to fairs and bet on horse races. He was a member of a sports club and hunted all over. He traveled to Florida in the winters and occasionally fished the Great Lakes. At the Home, Hubie enjoys participating in group activities, going on bus rides around the County, listening to music and attending barbecues.
In his lifetime, Hubie has helped veterans all over Maine and served his country proudly.
