115 Years Ago: Oct. 7, 1897
• The first deer of the season was brought to Caribou Monday by Charles Smith of Perham. Shaw and Mitton bought it.
• The roller skating rink was opened Saturday afternoon, under the management of O. L. Atherton during the coming season.
• Miss June Hardison is again at her post in the jewelry store of H. E. Jones, Sweden St., after having taken an enforced vacation for three months on account of illness.
100 Years Ago-Oct. 3, 1912
Passenger train service — The Canadian Pacific Railway is offering passenger train service, effective from October 8th, 1911 between the towns of Presque Isle, Caribou and Fort Fairfield. Additional connections may be made to the following locations: Grand Falls, Edmundston, Plaster Rock, Woodstock, Houlton, McAdam Junction, St. Stephen, St. Andrews, Fredericton, St. John, Bangor, Portland and Boston.
Local musical talent — For the first time in several years, Caribou is to have presented by local talent a musical comedy, “Capt. Bing,” one of the most comic operas now on the stage. Some of Caribou’s best talent will be found in the cast which includes: Atwood W. Spaulding, Dr. Basil O’Grady, Dr. Charles Thomas, E. P. Wilkins, Louis Sirois, Walter Bishop, Miss Marguerite Smith, Miss Hazel Leavitt, Miss Dora Larrabee and Miss Dora Gammon.

Newest scout troop — The 22nd new troop formed during the Forward Step Program of Katahdin Council Boy Scouts of America is Troop 181 at Caribou sponsored by Gray Memorial Methodist Church, Rev. David R. Hickland, pastor and scoutmaster of the troop. The two other troops in Caribou are Troop 182 sponsored by Caribou Lions Club with Jack Margesson as scoutmaster and Troop 184 sponsored by the Sacred Heart Society with Clement McDonald as scoutmaster.
Starch startup — At a meeting of farmers held at the Woodland Town Hall on Tuesday evening, a farmer co-operative starch company was organized. The factory will be farmer-owned and controlled and will be operated on a true co-operative basis. Officers and directors of the Colby Co-operative Starch Company are: president, George V. Brown; vice-president, Ray Philbrick; secretary, Frank P. Thomas; treasurer, W. A. Margison.

Anti-polio campaign — A polio immunization clinic of such magnitude that it could reach tens of thousands of Aroostook men, women and children was outlined to the Kiwanis Club this week by Dr. H. D. Collins who is heading up the Caribou end of a vast county project. Caribou and Presque Isle alone will have the opportunity to administer Sabin vaccine to 20,000 persons, 10,000 in each community.
Perham personals — Weekend guests of Senator and Mrs. Harold Bragdon were his brother-in-law and sister Mr. and Mrs. Clifford H. Wilder of Portland. Larry Hallowell, a student at UofM, was at home with his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Harry Hallowell for the weekend.

NMVTI soccer success — The Northern Maine Vocational Technical Institute enjoyed another very successful week as they picked up four more wins and their first ever national ranking – fourth in the country in the latest rankings of the National Little College Athletic Association. Coach Bill Casavant expressed the feeling of the school’s administration saying, “We are all very pleased and proud of the ranking with this being our first year in the organization.”
Meritorious award — Capt. Richard A. Smart, a Caribou native was awarded the U.S. Army’s Meritorious Medal, Sept. 29, at Fort McClellan, Ala. for service as commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Co., Basic Training Committee Group, and also as chief of operations, Chemical and Biological Division and Senior Tactical Training Officer at the U.S. Army Chemical School. A 1976 graduate of Caribou High School, Smart and his wife Janet reside in Weaver, Ala. with their four children. He is the son of Mary Lou Murphy of Caribou.
