The Houlton High School football team has enjoyed early success in its first foray into the world of interscholastic sports. The team will be on the road for the 2012 season, awaiting the completion of its home field.
The bus rides are long, but this year’s varsity football players know they are building a foundation for the future of Houlton High School football.
Last Tuesday, the team traveled to Lincoln and faced the Mattanawcook Academy Lynx, picking up an 18-0 win.
After a tentative series, the Shires ran off three unanswered touchdowns by sophomore quartrback Jake Drew.
The defense was aggressive, anchored by John Ramsey, J.J. Jones and Ryan Baptista.
On Monday, the Shires endured some hiccups, according to assistant coach Andy Hay, as they went into halftime leading Maine Central Institute, 14-12.
Coach Brian Reynolds was hardly impressed with the performance up to that point and gave what Hay called a “spirited, but frank pep talk” to his charges.
The Shires came out fired up for the second half, scoring three unanswered touchdowns and shutting down MCI’s offense.
Drew ran for a 51-yard score to go with two, three-yard plunges for scores. Drew also passed to Lucas Flewelling for a 25-yard goal. Conversions were completed by Cyrus Brooker and Sam St. John, as the Shires won 36-12.
The defense responded well in the second half behind Josh Upton, Jones, Matt Phillips and Baptista. The offensive line performance was keyed by Mike Holmes, Nick Hagan, Gary Tucker, Sabastion Walton and Ramsey.
The Shires’ next game is Monday at Dexter.
