Vikes to play in tennis final

The Caribou and Presque Isle varsity golf teams met up for the second time this season, with the Wildcats able to complete the season sweep with a 17-stroke victory in a match played in Caribou.

PI had a score of 178 and was led by co-medalists Adam Flynn and Gabe Player, who both carded 44s on the afternoon. Also for the Wildcats, Mike Boone and Karson Eaton had 45s.

For Caribou, which totaled 195, Dayne Savage was the top golfer with a 47 and Donovan Savage had a 48. Cory Rideout and Connor Thibeault both shot 50s.

The ’Cats were also victorious at home over Houlton last Tuesday, 170-179. Flynn and Boone shared medalist honors with 41s, while teammates Josh Gordon and Liam Hughes had 44s.

Cole McLaughlin and Garrett Putnam carded 44s for the Shires, who suffered their first loss after opening with three consecutive victories.

The Central Aroostook Panthers lost to Hodgdon, 7-4 in match play last Tuesday at Houlton Community Golf Club. For CA, Chandler Brewer had his team’s low round with a 46. Zach McClung followed with a 49.

Chris Wallace’s 39 allowed him to take medalist honors.

At Portage Hills Country Club that afternoon, the Fort Fairfield Tigers scored a victory over the Ashland Hornets.

Robbie Watson had a 41 to lead FF, while Mark Corella had a 42 for Ashland.

In other recent matches, Fort Fairfield bested Limestone-MSSM Thursday at Aroostook Valley Country Club, 177-227 in medal play and 10-1 in match play. Watson shot a 38 and was the medalist, while the Eagles’ Megan Flanagin shot a 42. At Portage Hills CC that day, CA defeated Ashland, 7-4. Mark Corella was the medalist with a 39. Alex Folsom paced CA by shooting a 49.

Hodgdon will host this year’s Aroostook League Championship/Regional Qualifier Friday at Houlton Community Golf Club. Teams competing will be Ashland, Central Aroostook, Fort Fairfield, Hodgdon and Limestone-MSSM. County bragging rights will be up for grabs, as well as positions for teams and individuals at the upcoming state tournaments Oct. 13 and 20 at Natanis Golf Club in Vassalboro.
