PRESQUE ISLE — The University of Maine at Presque Isle will be offering two courses beginning Wednesday, Oct. 10, and Tuesday, Oct. 16, respectively, as part of its American Management Association’s certificate programs. The course registration deadline is Wednesday, Oct. 3.
These fall courses, part of a multi-course curriculum leading to certificates in management and human resources management, are specifically created to meet the unique needs of working professionals who want to be more effective in their current positions and better prepared for future advancement, according to Keith Madore, campus AMA coordinator.
By meeting in a classroom setting with other managers from many different organizations, students are able to see how other companies handle problems similar to their own. Instructors with extensive business experience and excellent teaching skills facilitate the courses.
The course “What Managers Do” will be held on Tuesdays from Oct. 16 to Nov. 13, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the Campus Center, Room 118. The course will focus on the major components of a manager’s job, from planning and organizing to staffing, directing and controlling. The insights gained will help participants to delegate effectively, motivate successfully, use time efficiently and increase productivity. Kim Jones, marketing coordinator at Cary Medical Center, will lead the course.
“How to Manage Conflict in the Organization” is scheduled for Wednesdays from Oct. 10 through Nov. 14, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the Campus Center, Alumni Room. The course will equip participants with the strategies, tactics and insights needed to gain control of tough conflict situations, as well as the skills needed to transform conflict into a positive, productive force by applying the proven techniques of principled negotiation. LaNiece Winslow Sirois, human resources trainer, will lead the course.
