•Dr. W. E. Sincock has added an x-ray machine to his office equipment.
•The contract for building the new primary school house on the Jones lot has been let to J. S. Getchell & Son. The building is to be one story high and will contain two rooms, one 28 x 35 and the other 28 x 30, with floors and wainscoatings of hard wood.

Washburn personals — Mr. Stanley Delong has purchased the stock and tools of M. S. Gibson, the barber, and is running the shop vacated by Mr. Gibson.

Picking champ — A brand new agricultural sporting event, an International Potato Picking Championship Contest, during which Maine pickers will vie with those from other states and countries for world championship honors, will be staged in Aroostook County, the country’s greatest potato growing region.
Grateful chickens — Abel Levasseur, a prominent farmer on the Van Buren Road, struck a fox with the bumper on his car this Thursday morning about six o’clock. Consequently, Mr. Levasseur has a fox skin and the thanks of farmers in that vicinity who have poultry.
Wheel thieves — Chief of Police Lawrence Elliott advises the free use of padlocks to secure movable objects until thieves responsible for the disappearance of two automobile wheels are apprehended. Several months ago, in the same yard, a steering wheel was stolen from a parked car.
50 Years Ago-Sept. 13, 1962
Harvest help — Caribou public schools close today for potato harvest; in Houlton, area schools will not close for another week. Meanwhile, Canadian workers are arriving in ever-increasing numbers, at peak harvest, about 7,000 will have been recruited from Quebec and New Brunswick with 20,000 domestic workers joining them in the fields.
BPW club news — The Business and Professional Women’s Club held its first fall meeting with 21 present. The club will sponsor a supper at USO Club, Sept. 22, with the following committee: Isabelle Bennett, Mary McNamara, Alice Hagerman, Bertha Adams, Clara Piper, Frances Brett and Elizabeth Hitchings.
Business news — The Presque Isle Furniture Corporation, a new business venture, has leased two former Snark missile hangars at the Skyway Industrial Park.

Tourism conference host — The Governor’s Conference on Tourism will convene in Caribou next month with Gov. John R. McKernan opening the conference Oct. 29 at the new Caribou Motor Inn and Convention Center.
Cross-country champs — Both the Viking boys and girls cross-country teams came away with county championships last week at a meet held at the Caribou Country Club. Jeff Cyr took top honors at the boys varsity level, with Caribou’s Kim Nichols finishing first for junior varsity girls.
Choral society news — The Caribou Choral Society will begin rehearsals for its annual Christmas concert. The chorus, which began as the Caribou Bicentennial Chorus in 1976, is always in need of alto and tenor voices, but all are welcome. Conductor is Dan Ladner of Presque Isle, accompanied by Barbara Dempsey of Washburn.
