Fun activities helped break the ice during Move-In Weekend at the Maine School of Science and Mathematics. Having some parachute fun were, from left, facing front: Peter Emidy, Brittany Clark, Rady Linkel, MSSM Dean of Students and Director of Residential Life Matt Grillo, Brandon Peterson and Brandon Wood.

While good-byes are often bitter sweet, a new MSSM parent, Lee Rose of Jonesport, said during the Move-in Weekend that he was excited for the experiences that await his son, Corin.

“The best part was right after we made our (slightly) tearful goodbye, we watched another child approach Corin to welcome him to his new life,” Rose said. “When we arrived home, there was already a note waiting in our email, attesting how ‘amazing’ his first day was.”

The weekend allowed students an opportunity to get settled, to meet their classmates and have a little fun with planned weekend activities that included the annual Pi K Challenge — a 5 km run/walk out to Trafton Lake Park, where students were met with a much appreciated barbecue brunch.

Classes at MSSM began August 20 and cover a wide array of topics. This year’s new course offerings include Introduction to Engineering, Coming of Age in Europe and North America, Algebraic Geometry, and Acadian Culture and History.

Students hail from communities around the state, with 15 different Maine counties being represented in the MSSM classrooms.

A tuition-free, public, residential high school that enrolls students from across the state and serves over 500 students each year through its academic and summer offerings, MSSM opened in 1995.

The school provides high school students a rigorous, student-centered curriculum that emphasizes the connections between math, science, and humanities, and culminates in opportunities for authentic research. MSSM’s summer camps inspire Maine middle school students to explore their passions for science, math, engineering, and technology. MSSM also provides professional development opportunities for teachers throughout the state.
