PRESQUE ISLE — A new tradition may be starting at Central Aroostook ARC, a local non-profit dedicated to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities … a tradition that was popular at one time but lost its grounding decades ago.
“This past May, the agency held its first potluck supper in 14 years, and it was a success. With close to 100 people in attendance, comprised of parents, guardians, staff and individuals who attend program, the place was packed,” said Natasha Millette, special projects coordinator. “Truly, it was a pleasant surprise to see such a wonderful turnout for the agency’s first potluck in years. With how busy families are these days, the administration was very happy to see the amount of support for this type of event.”
At the request of many who attended that potluck, Central Aroostook ARC is hosting its second potluck of the year Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. in the building that houses the agency’s special-purpose private school, Opportunity Training Center. This potluck has a barbecue theme, but more notably will be focused on the first 25 years of the organization, which holds much history.
Steve Richard, the longest-tenured executive director of Central Aroostook ARC, oftentimes refers to the “founding fathers” of the agency, those who truly made toilsome efforts in order to establish the association. Due to their hard work, the agency was able to launch and build its special-purpose private school in 1967, then establish day programs for adults, and ultimately become what it is today: an association with eight programs and one mission — to provide the people in their programs the necessary supports to reach their highest potential.
“During the event, the agency’s goal is to remind parents, guardians, staff and families of the efforts put forth by the founders of Central Aroostook ARC, and allow them to recognize that without those who put years of sweat and tears into fighting for the foundation of this organization, it truly would not exist as it does today,” said Millette.
The agency looks forward to a nice turnout for the upcoming potluck, and hopes to reignite the passion behind their parent-inspired events.
