Hanson, Phyllis, 95, of New Sweden, on August 30, 2012. Arrangements are in the care of the Lancaster-Morgan Funeral Home, Caribou.


AR Phyllis Hanson OBNEW SWEDEN – Phyllis Anderson Hewitt Hanson, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully at Borderview Nursing Home in Van Buren on August 30, 2012, with her adoring children and grandchildren at her side. She was born on December 5, 1916, the daughter of Swedish Immigrants Carl and Anna Anderson, and a sister to 18 siblings.

Phyllis worked for 27 years for the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk at the New Sweden Post Office. She was a member of the Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church and endlessly volunteered her talents to her church and community. She loved and honored her Swedish heritage and created a life with her children and grandchildren rich in her Scandinavian culture. She shared her gift of baking for those she knew and welcomed everyone into her home to indulge in the most delicious smorgasbords, jolly card parties, and rousing games of scrabble. She was a true angel to all and a blessing to those she had met. Her gracious heart and profound compassion towards others will leave only touching memories for her family and friends.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her loving husband, Wallace Hewitt; her second husband, Allen Hanson; her parents, Carl and Anna Anderson; her sisters: Lillie, Ethel, Elba, Signe, Bertha, Tillie, Eva, Velma and Grace; her brothers: Gustaf, Roland, Vaughn, William, Waldo, Russell, Wallace, Norman and Gaylin.

She is survived by adoring children, Beverly Derrah and her husband, George of Limestone, Carl Hewitt and his wife, Ann of Sterling, MA, David Hewitt and his wife, Albertine of New Sweden, and Michael Hewitt and his wife, Donna of New Sweden; her 19 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren (with two more blessed arrivals on the way) and five great-great-grandchildren.

Calling hours were held 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, at the Lancaster-Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover Street, Caribou. Funeral Services were held 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, at the Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church in New Sweden with Rev. Gordon Compton officiating. Interment was in New Sweden Cemetery. A time of fellowship and coffee was at the church after the burial.
