NMCC to host Historical Society presentation

PRESQUE ISLE — The Presque Isle Historical Society is continuing its series of presentations on key happenings that have shaped the history of the region that began earlier this year. Two sessions remain in the series, which are both open to the public at no charge and will be held on the Northern Maine Community College campus in the Edmunds Conference Center.

Community members are invited to come learn more about Allen C.T. Wilson (1866-1952) on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 5:30 p.m.

Wilson was a local businessman, farmer and family man who was very involved in the Presque Isle community. Wilson served on the Presque Isle City Council for 30 years as well as serving terms in both the Maine House of Representatives and the Senate. Wilson was also instrumental in Presque Isle successfully building the Northern Maine Sanitorium and, because of his efforts, one of the main buildings was named in his honor. In fact, the sign that was on the building will be formally presented to the Presque Isle Historical Society on Sept. 5 by the Wilson family.

“Engaging people in local history leads to a greater sense of community pride and is integral to the mission of the Presque Isle Historical Society. We are proud to continue our partnership with Northern Maine Community College to offer these presentations as NMCC has had a rich heritage of serving our community for over 50 years,” said Kimberly Smith of the Presque Isle Historical Society, who is leading each of the sessions.

This marks the third presentation in this series offered by the Presque Isle Historical Society at NMCC in 2012. Earlier this year, sessions were held on the history of the Presque Isle hospital, in honor of The Aroostook Medical Center’s 100th anniversary, and on the history of the Northern Maine Fair.

The series will conclude in December with a historical look at ice harvesting in Presque Isle.
