Wilder’s Jewelry Store is celebrating its 80th year of business in downtown Presque Isle. As most successful businesses do, it has transformed itself many times. Originating as a watchmaker’s shop in 1932 it has now blossomed into a very multifaceted storefront with everything from diamonds to handbags.
Owner Cathy Beaulieu has an eye for what her longtime customers will want … and she gets it. It’s not uncommon for Cathy to go to a show and see a ring that she knows one of her customers will love. But it doesn’t end there. She comes back to the store with the ring, necklace and earrings making it easier for the husband to buy gifts for the next three gift-giving occasions.
“That’s what keeps the same guys coming back year after year,” said Beaulieu. “That and we always gift wrap at no extra charge.”
Beaulieu said the relationships that she and her staff have with the clientele is unsurpassed. It’s not uncommon for us to remember that five years ago a gentleman bought his wife a ruby ring. The most important component of their success goes far beyond “making the sale.” The relationship is one that continues for a lifetime of sharing recipes and life stories.
Since March, Wilder’s has been through its first-ever major renovation. From floor to ceiling there isn’t a part of the store, with the exception of the original watch bench, that has been replaced or revamped. They’ve added hardwood floors, all new lighting, and painted from front to back. The renovation has given Beaulieu the opportunity not only to showcase new lines but to better serve her customers. With the addition of an entire new room she has moved her line of Vera Bradley handbags into its own space. Wilder’s is the only Vera Bradley and Pandora Bead dealer north of Bangor and Beaulieu prides herself on selection at its best.
While handbags and beads are fun to dabble in Beaulieu doesn’t lose sight of what makes Wilder’s Jewelry store just that. The ladies at Wilder’s are often telling people that they’ve been selling diamonds since 1932. Selling magic for 80 years is a great way to stay looking young!
