Ricker Rumblings
by Lois Downing
Hello everyone! I’m back having gone to Rhode Island with daughter Kathryn Hall. We visited Cadence Forbes, 4-month-old great-granddaughter and her mother Rebecca and her father Patrick Forbes; also her sister, Amanda Carney and her husband Joe and children, Leander, 1 and 1/2 and the newborn 2 months old Tristan. They are beautiful children. No doubt all grandmothers think that way. We also had a visit with Margaret Kenyon, a former Houlton resident, the other great-grandmother.
Yvonne Given Hastey and her husband of Pennsylvana have been visiting in the community with family and friends.
Jean Adams has been entertaining her son Steven from Florida. He has now retuned home. Charlene, our liasion, was in to show off her less than a month old granddaughter, Emma, another beautiful grandchild.
Blaine Johnston has relocated to the North Road. We hope you will be happy there, Blaine. We have a new tenant, namely Mildred Parmigiana, a very attractive lady. I hope your stay is a very happy one here at Ricker Plaza.
The weather is favorable and moving right along with the summer. The following is printed from St. Mary church bulletin: “Social Justice and Peace Commission has been granted funds through the Matthew 25 Project with Catholic Charities of Maine to assist those in need. We have developed a program to assist with the purchase of materials for small weatherization home projects. The project is open to any individual homeowner living in the cluster 4 who meets specific criteria, regardless of religious affiliation. All applications will be considered but due to limited funding we will not be able to fund all requests. To be considered or for more information, please contact Fr. David Raymnd at the rectory (St. Mary) between Aug. 27 an Sept. 21.” (Just thought this might help someone in the community.)
Did a lot of you out there see the apron display last week at the potato festival? I heard it was very nice.
Good as New thrift store under the management of St. Mary Church has moved to Main Street, near Jerry Adams haircuts and salon.
Bea Brodeer-Oldach, a friend from Ohio, was a visitor of Lois Downing a few weeks ago. Helen Cunliffe of Madigan Apartments fell in her apartment and is at this time a patient at Houlton Regional Hospital.
On Angels: “Angels are tour guides along the path to heaven, pointing out the obstacles and pitfalls that keep us from finding our joyful place in eternity.”
My bible verse is from Luke 8:16: “No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel or sets it under a bed; rather, he places it on a lampstand so that those who enter may see the light.” May you all have a wonderful week filled with joy and safety.

Island Falls News
On Aug. 12 Clayton and Charlene Webb hosted their annual Country Jam party on the patio of their home. Over 40 people attended, many bringing guitars to accompany all the singing, which began at 2 p.m. and ended at 6 p.m.
At one time during the affair Clayton (age 88) donned an old costume that he had once worn during an Island Falls parade and entertained the group with a song and a dance. Grilled hot dogs were served to the group. along with salads brought by some and for dessert there was strawberry shortcake, made by Charlene. Every one agreed that this was a great party and hope to repeat it next year.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Shields, former residents of the area are at their cottage in Shin Pond for the summer season and have enjoyed all the Summerfest activities, including the Alumni banquet. Mary Lou Pomeroy and daughter, Jane Foster, have been recent visitors at my home for a couple of hours before returning home to Caribou.
I have had a bit of trouble with wasps trying to build a nest on my outside light. Finally sprayed the area and drove them off and have now removed the globe that held the light bulb. Hopefully that will be the last of that problem. l am putting out a few bird seeds now that it is cooler in the morning. Hope the pesky squirrels don’t spy them and come and eat them all. Every now and then I throw out old bread from the refrigerator and the big crows spy that and clean up every bit of it in about 10 minutes. And, believe it or not, on Aug. 23 I actually had a deer come running out of the woods to the left of my house and across my back lawn and into Sam’s backyard. Maybe when it gets cooler we will see more of them. A neighbor reported that on his way home from the pond he spied a young deer on the side of the road. So maybe we do have a few deer around but they stick close to the woods, probably cooler there.
