HOULTON, Maine — A 24-year-old Houlton man was charged with endangering the welfare of a child Aug. 8 after leaving two small children at home with their mother, who was apparently unconscious from a drug overdose.

According to Houlton Police Chief Butch Asselin, Officer Theron Bickford arrested Michael Shain on Hartford Street at 5:08 p.m. for allegedly leaving two 5-year-old children at home with their mother, who had overdosed.
“He didn’t request an ambulance as he should have, but left her in an unconscious state for hours,” Asselin said. “Medication was strewn over the carpet, which the children could have ingested. As it was, the children picked up the medication and flushed it down the toilet.”
The incident is still under investigation.
