Historic barbecues taking place in Caribou, Limestone on Aug. 18

Saturday seems to be the day for barbecue enthusiasts, as two longtime annual grilling traditions will be held on Aug. 18.

Taking place in Caribou is the Gray Memorial United Methodist Church’s annual Chicken Barbecue; the top-secret sauce that makes the barbecue so flavorful was created over fifty years ago and, as the event continues to draw hungry crowds, the recipe has stood the test of time.

The price of the barbecue is $10, which purchases a half chicken, potato salad, coleslaw, beans, rolls and cup cakes with a variety of beverage to choose from.

“Come and enjoy the food and fellowship at the picnic area of the church, located at the corner of Prospect and Sweden streets in Caribou,” barbecue organizers encouraged.

Proceeds from the tasty event will benefit the church’s Capital Campaign Fund for restoration of the historic building, which turned 100 this year. The barbecue kicks off at 10 a.m. and will continue until mid-afternoon; takeout is available.

Limestone has its own barbecue with historic significance — the Limestone/Caswell Historical Society will be holding their 14th annual Picnic and Barbecue from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18.

Barbecue enthusiasts can eat in or take out at $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. The event is held at 77 Access Highway rain or shine.
