Library to sponsor Summerfest Pet Show

MARS HILL NEWS

by Tomi Henderson

As part of the upcoming summer activities, the Walter T.A. Hansen Memorial Library is sponsoring a Pet Show on Saturday, Aug. 4. From 1-2 p.m. at the high school; those who want to show off their pets are welcome to participate. For extra “cuteness” you can dress to match your entry!

The Best of Show will be determined by “People’s Choice.” Voting will take place by dropping donations into your favorite pet’s jar, which will be on a table in the parking lot. Whichever jar has the most money will win a $25 Walmart gift certificate.

If you want to be part of the judged pets, please call the library at 429-9625 with your name, your pet’s name and type. You may also contact Tomi at 429-9126 or at tomihen@yahoo.com with your information.

This is not limited to cats and dogs. However, all animals must be leashed or otherwise contained! Proceeds will be used to benefit the library.

Rotary Club

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Tuesday morning, July 17, at the Aroostook Health Center.

The special speaker was Stephen Eyler, executive director of Homeless Services of Aroostook. He spoke of the facility and the needs of the families and individuals that they serve. Theirs is the only family shelter in the county, with 30 beds in 11 rooms. They also have 15 low-income units that are leased out to qualifying families.

Each family or individual works with a case manager to lay out a plan and timeline for training, employment, etc. People are treated with dignity and given hope to be able to break the cycle that they may have found themselves in.

There is zero tolerance for any drug or alcohol abuse and individuals are tested frequently.

The facility is funded mainly through Maine State Housing, United Way, area towns and private donations. They are in need of stackable beds, so they can move them around if necessary in the 11 rooms they have. The Presque Isle Rotary Club has named the shelter as their Special Project for this year’s auction, with plans to purchase new beds and mattresses for the facility.

Another need is for a new facility in the Presque Isle area. If they had 22,500 square feet on one level, it would allow them to expand the family capacity as well as have an area designated as a 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. night shelter for anyone needing help. Their current home has one handicapped room on the first floor, with 10 rooms on the second level.
