To the editor:
Approximately a three-quarter mile section of Back Ridge Road in Houlton has been treated with calcium again. Supposedly, this will keep the dust down. It’s summer and it’s dry and it’s rural. We can deal with the dust. What we can’t deal with is the calcium eating away at the undersides of our vehicles.
More often than not, when we take our vehicles for the yearly inspection, the brake lines and everything else underneath is in question because they’ve been damaged by the calcium.
In case the “powers that be” haven’t noticed, most people who live in this area aren’t rich. They can’t afford to replace brake lines, etc. every few years. Money is tight and they’d rather put food on the table. After all, there is only one Houlton resident on that three-quarter mile section of Back Ridge Road. We’re thankful that the other end of Back Ridge Road in Littleton is not sprayed; therefore, we do have an escape route.
We think it’s a huge waste of money to treat a road which only has one Houlton residential dwelling and creates a hardship for everyone who has to maintain their vehicle after the corrosion has eaten away the whole bottom of the vehicle.
