NATALIA BRAGG, of Knot II Bragg Farm in Wade, talks with Maple Meadow Farm Fest visitor Jimmy Johnston about her all natural products she makes with herbs from Aroostook County. She is a founding member of the Aroostook County Herb Association and is a 42-year practicing herbalist. She is the sixth woman to practice the craft in her family. Bragg is wearing a handmade costume from the Elizabethan Era, which features what she calls “shopping cart” sleeves. According to Bragg, women would go out for the day with a walking stick looking to fill up their sleeves with herbs. Once their sleeves were full, they were “done for the day.” Extremely passionate about her craft, Bragg said, “I practice the same thing as my ancestors did.” For more information about her products, visit www.knotiibragg.com.

DONALD PAUL, also known as “Spirit Bear,” spent his time at the Maple Meadow Farm Fest inside a teepee cooking authentic fry bread over an open flame. Originally from Fredericton, New Brunswick and now living in Castle Hill, Paul says he “learned (his craft) from other natives.” He has shared his recipes with locals including Boy Scout troops. “I come here every year,” Paul said. In spite of the extreme heat on Saturday, Paul continued to make fry bread samples for anyone that was interested in trying a piece. Drizzled in honey, it was delicious!

MEGAN McKNIGHT, a member of the Presque Isle Youth Hockey team, stayed very busy painting faces during the Mapleton Daze Family and Friends Night. Here, she paints the cheek of Addison Haley. The Youth Hockey had a fund-raising booth, selling concessions and face-painting services.

The 2012 Mapleton Daze kicked off with the annual Woodie Waddell Memorial Cribbage Tournament. Over 20 people competed in the three-hour tournament. Congratulations to Matt Chasse of Mapleton for taking first place! I would like to extend a personal thanks to all the adults that played against my 9-year-old daughter, Madelyn. This was her first cribbage tournament, having just learned how to play a couple of months ago. Those adults that she played showed great patience, helping and teaching her along the way. This experience was enjoyable and memorable for her, thanks to the kindness of local dedicated cribbage players! You can count on seeing her again at next year’s tournament!

At the Family and Friends Night that was moved to the Lions Hall due to pending thunderstorms Friday evening, a great turnout attended the annual Lion’s Club chicken barbeque. The Mapleton Daze Committee held their drawing for the children’s bicycles and wagon. The winners were announced Friday evening and were as follows: tricycle donated by Circle of Friends Day Care Center was won by Zander Adler, the wagon donated by Mapleton ATV Club was won by Ian Roy, the boys bike donated by Star City Sanitation was won by Bryan Searles, and the girls bike donated by the Mapleton Daze Committee was won by Sophia Morton.
