    CRYSTAL – Dale Richard Desmond, 77, passed away July 1, 2012, in Smyrna, with his wife by his side. Dale was born July 27, 1935, in Island Falls, son of Pearle A. and Gertrude (Stairs) Desmond.
    Dale retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service. He served three years and ten months in Vietnam. Some of his medals include National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam campaign medal, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Meritorious Unit Accommodations, Vietnam Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal – first through fifth award. Dale always looked forward to hunting and fishing trips with the men of the Desmond family.
    He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Winnifred Desmond of Crystal; children, Michael Desmond of Patten, Lee Anne Desmond Hulbert and her husband, Charlie, and Gina Desmond of Patten and their mother, Janet, of Patten; three stepchildren, Michael MacArthur and his wife, Melanie, of Dyer Brook, Kevin MacArthur of Waterville and, Kelly Johnson and her husband, Chris, of Rindge, N.H.; grandchildren, David Gazaway and his wife, Kelley, of Oklahoma, Kristen Gazaway Lane and her fiance, Leslie Lane, of Sherman, Sarah Harris, Amy Grant and Dustin Grant, all of Patten, Karley Desmond of New York, Chandler, Gavin and Joey MacArthur of Waterville, Sarah and Erin MacArthur of Presque Isle and Wesley Johnson of Rindge, N.H.; great-grandchildren, Dalton, Shelby, David Lee and Julia Gazaway of Oklahoma, Tanner and Alexis Lane of Sherman and Simon Desmond of New York; many, many nieces, nephews and cousins; two brothers, Kenneth and his wife, Patricia, of Easton and Donald and his wife, Brenda, of Portsmouth, N.H.; sisters, Sharon Porter of Old Town and Kathy Merrill and her husband, Bob, of Presque Isle; sisters-in-law, Mable Desmond of Mapleton and Jackie Desmond Anderson of Island Falls; and brother-in-law, Fred Quint of Patten. He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Lloyd, Jerry and Terry; sister, Betty Quint; and grandson, Lee Michael Desmond.
    Graveside funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, at Crystal Cemetery, Winding Hill Road, Crystal. Arrangements by Bowers Funeral Home, Island Falls.
