Fireworks – not in city backyards
To the editor:
Since fireworks became readily available for purchase here in Presque Isle, we have experienced a steady barrage of firework explosions in our formerly quiet neighborhood. Nightly explosions have terrified pets and deprived us and our neighbors of the peace and quiet, and even safety, we once enjoyed in our own homes.
On the Fourth of July, we were truly alarmed as we watched a group of people setting off a full pyrotechnics display with aerials and other fireworks arching high above rooftops. All this was ignited in a vacant lot just 30 to 40 feet away from a neighbor’s home! From what we’ve observed, common sense and consideration have not prevailed. A congested, residential area is no place for these kinds of fireworks.
The state’s Act to Legalize the Sale, Possession and Use of Fireworks took effect in January, yet those serving on the city council at that time chose not to enact an ordinance setting restrictions on this new level of fireworks in the city of Presque Isle. Houlton has a comprehensive ordinance. In Caribou, a permit is needed to set off fireworks. Bangor, Orono, Portland and Rockland, among other Maine communities, prohibit their use.
We feel these kinds of fireworks need local regulation and that the public should be well-educated about laws regarding their use. We urge those with concerns to contact a Presque Isle City Council member to let them know your views. This new council has the opportunity and obligation to make changes everyone can live with.
