Theft reported at hotel

PRESQUE ISLE — A guest at the Northeastland Hotel had an unwelcomed visitor, when someone broke into their room recently, making entry through a window.

A hotel official reported the incident to police around 6:05 a.m. on June 23. He told police an unknown individual reached in through the window and took items out of one of the occupant’s bags. Officer Peter Johnson, Presque Isle Police Department, responded to investigate.

Johnson spoke with the room’s occupant, a woman from New Jersey, who reported sometime during the night someone entered the room through the window and took her granddaughter’s backpack. The woman said she found the backpack outside the window on the adjacent roof. One item, valued at about $80, was taken from the bag.

Later that day a pilot who had stayed at the hotel reported seeing a male individual wearing a baseball cap sticking his head into his room in the middle of the night. The pilot was staying in the room next to the woman and her granddaughter.

Officer Kevin Reed responded to the hotel after management reported another room was determined to have been broken into, with damage reported to items within. Sgt. Mark Barnes, PIPD, was called in to assist with the collecting evidence.

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the PIPD at 764-4476.
