Rotary tourney set for July 14

    The Presque Isle Rotary Club’s seventh annual charity golf tournament is Saturday, July 14.

Past tournaments have raised a cumulative total of $58,000 and this year’s event will benefit the Aroostook County Chapter of Junior Achievement of Maine, Inc. The non-profit organization is dedicated to educating students in grades K-12 about entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs in the classroom and in the workplace.

The golf tourney features cash prizes for the winning teams, prizes for closest to pin, longest drive and a putting contest. A new car is the prize for the hole-in-one contest.

A barbecue lunch will be provided to all participants. Golfer registration begins at 8 a.m. and a shotgun start is slated for 9 a.m. The registration fee for the three-person tourney is $120 per team.

2012 any-deer permit applications now available

    Applications for 2012 any-deer (antlerless) permit lottery are now available online from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

A total of 34,160 any-deer permits will be issued in 13 of the state’s 29 wildlife management districts for this year’s whitetail deer hunting season, which begins in late October. It is bucks only in all other wildlife management districts.

Online applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 15. Paper applications may be submitted in person or by mail no later than July 27. To apply online, visit www.mefishwildlife.com. The Department no longer mails paper applications.

It is free to apply for the any-deer permit lottery. The drawing will be held on Friday, Sept. 7.

The 13 wildlife management districts where any-deer (antlerless) deer may be hunted this year, with a permit, are 12, 13, 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 and 29.

Deer hunting season (firearms) begins with Youth Deer Hunting Day on Saturday, Oct. 20. Youth may take a buck statewide or an antlerless deer only in the wildlife management districts where any-deer permits will be issued this fall.

This year, Maine Residents Only Day is on Saturday, Oct. 27, and deer season runs Oct. 29 through Nov. 24.

UMPI Owls hoop camp

    Jim Casciano, head coach of the University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s basketball team, will direct the UMPI Owls Basketball Camp, to be held July 16-20 at Wieden Gymnasium.

Session I, for grades 1-4, will go from 9 a.m.-noon, while Session II, for grades 5-8, runs from 1-4 p.m.

Each camper will receive individual attention with emphasis on the fundamental skills of basketball. There will be daily games, special contests and giveaways and awards. A free T-shirt will be presented on the final day.

Golf scramble at AVCC to benefit hoop hall of fame

    The second annual Maine Basketball Hall of Fame golf scramble will be held Friday, Aug. 3 at Aroostook Valley Country Club in Fort Fairfield.

This four-person Oldsmobile scramble format will have an 11 a.m. shotgun start, with registration taking place from 10-10:45 a.m. The field is limited to the first 40 paid teams and the entry fee is $50 per person, which includes a steak or chicken barbecue.

More than $4,000 in prizes will be awarded to the top two gross and top eight net teams. A 2012 Ford Focus is the hole-in-one prize, courtesy of Griffeth Ford-Lincoln-Honda. Other contests will also be held.

Proceeds from the tourney will go to the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame, which will be located in a wing of the new Maine Center now under construction in Bangor.
