Earlier this spring, Winslow organized and held a crocheting workshop at the Aroostook Centre Mall. The Granny Squares created from the workshop — and from others assisting with the project — were sewn into blankets, lap robes and afghans that Winslow donated to local organizations.

For her Silver Award project, titled “Learning from the Past, Giving to the Future — Come Learn Crocheting with Me,” Winslow taught younger children how to make crochet chains and Granny Squares at workshops and Girl Scout Troop meetings. The resulting 326 Granny Squares were assembled into blankets, lap robes, and afghans by Winslow and donated to the Pregnancy Care Center of Aroostook, the Sister Mary O’Donnell Homeless Shelter and at the Hope and Justice Project.

“Going for the Girl Scout Silver Award — the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn — requires that she spend a minimum of 50 hours exploring her community, identifying issues, making a plan and putting it into motion,” said Joan McDonald, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of Maine. “Stephanie’s Take Action project gave her the chance to show that she is a leader who is organized, determined and dedicated to improving her community.”

The daughter of Nancy and Willie Winslow, Stephanie has been a Girl Scout for over eight years and is a member of Troop 677. She will be a member of the freshman class at Presque Isle High School in the fall.

Girl Scouts of Maine provides services and support to over 16,000 girl and adult members statewide. For information on membership, programs and volunteer opportunities, contact Girl Scouts of Maine at 1-888-922-4763 or visit www.girlscoutsofmaine.org.
