Diana Gehring, of Bridgewater, was elected commander of the Department of Maine Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary at its recent convention held at the Four Points Sheraton, Bangor.
The Department of Maine DAV Auxiliary was formed in 1977 and since then has had only one other commander from Aroostook County. Commander Alice Pratt, also from Bridgewater, served during the 1982-83 term.
Also elected were: Roxanne York, senior vice-commander; Anne Leavitt, 1st j. v. commander; Joan Fournier, 2nd j. v. commander; Sylvia Heath, treasurer; and Brenda Ackley, chaplain.
The DAV Auxiliary helps all veterans by volunteering in hospitals and veterans’ homes. They also support legislative efforts that promote increased health care and other benefits veterans have earned. Additionally, the DAV Auxiliary promotes patriotism and conducts events throughout the year raising funds to help veterans and their families. Monies raised through the Aroostook County annual “Forget Me Not” fund drive are spent to benefit Aroostook County veterans and their families.
Locally, Disabled American Veterans Smart Ricker 10, Chapter and Unit, holds a monthly meeting at the OTC, 25 Lombard St., Presque Isle, the fourth Sunday of each month. Meetings are at 1 p.m. with a free lunch served at noon. All are welcome.
