Of local interest — State Commissioner Hardison has nearly finished his specifications for the State Road in Houlton, which will be built on Court Street and extended up over Hannigan Hill so called.
A case for good roads — Editor Chas. Fogg wrote: If anyone would like to see how Good Roads stand the rains and winter weather they should look at stretches of state road which have been properly built, and see how well they stood up, how quickly they dry up and how much labor is saved in hauling over these stretches.

New Lions Club President — Kenneth Young was elected and installed as president of the Houlton Lions Club. Other officers included A.L. Rogers, first vice president; George B. Barnes, second VP; Humphrey Flemington, secretary and treasurer; E.C. Joy, Lion Tamer; and Ralph Kelley, Tail Twister.

Now open for season — Aroostook Lodge and Sunset Park on Grand Lake opened with an enlarged kitchen and dining room under the capable charge of Mrs. Edith Tuck. The popular establishment featured lobster and chicken dinners, boats and canoes and new heated cabins.
Changing of the guard — The Customs Officer in Monticello, Mr. Leon Adams, has been transferred to Jackman and that station’s officer, Mr. Moreshed, was sent here with his wife and family.

Parking controversy — A long-standing plan to change parking on Main Street from angular to parallel and to make Broadway a one-way street was put into action this week but has come up against some opposition. Opponents say the changes will open up travel lanes too much and would likely create a dangerous speedway mentality.
Outstanding Citizen — The Rotary Community Service Award was awarded to Charles Wood, Houlton High School teacher for more than 30 years. The presentation was made by Alvin Cotton, also a teacher and the only living charter member of the local service club.
Golf course oddities — Buck Logan, within two months, witnessed the playing of two holes-in-one at the Houlton Golf Course. The first came when he was playing with Fred Putnam and the other was while playing with Elmer Laveway.

Proposed new well — John Clark, general manager of the Houlton Water Company, told members of the Town Council that efforts to find a dependable below-ground water source to replace the open water source at B Stream had been successful. Plans were under way to move forward with drilling a permanent well in the Benn Hill area of Hodgdon to supplement underground sources at Cary’s Mills.
Miss Greater Houlton — Susan York, who held the title of Miss Greater Houlton for two years, relinquished her title Saturday evening as Daphne Cushman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clint Cushman of Hodgdon, received the title. Kim Clukey of Houlton was named runnerup.
Oldest resident — Mrs. Ula Joslyn of Monticello received the Boston Post cane from Monticello Council Chairman Herschel Good.
Promoted — Mrs. Julie A. Folsom was promoted to Manager of Insurance Services at the George S. Gentle Company. Mrs. Vicki R. Carpenter was promoted to Manager of the Accounting-Computer Services department.
