MMG head speaks to PROBUS Club

    PRESQUE ISLE — The May 17th meeting of the PROBUS Club was held at Northern Maine Community College’s Reed Commons, with President Karen Sweeney presiding.

    Mel Fitzherbert introduced guest speaker Larry Shaw, CEO of Maine Mutual Group Insurance Company. His informative and interesting review of MMG reflected his pride in its growth, accomplishments and special place as a successful enterprise in this area.

    Originating in 1897 in Houlton and then moving to Presque Isle in 1904, the company blossomed and is now a $140 million business with 165 employees – 130 who work in Presque Isle. Agencies are located in four other states – New Hampshire, Vermont, Pennsylvania and Virginia. according to Shaw.

    He said MMG has grown with the times, not only structurally but with the use of high-technology materials and a core of people who write their own software programs. Benefit plans and bonus packages for all employees are a plus. Exceptional customer service has played a role in MMG being awarded state and national recognition as the best place to work. MMG is a unique Presque Isle insurance business with a bright future.

    A question-answer period followed and Shaw was presented with a certificate of appreciation.
