Ashland Scouts help plant trees

ASHLAND NEWS

by Susan Feeney-Hopkins

In early May, enthusiastic Scouts from the Ashland Boy Scout Troop 179 and Ashland Girl Scout Troop 1151 helped members of the Portage Lake Forest Committee plant cedar seedlings to reforest an abandoned power line right-of-way located within an important deer management area.

ASHLAND BOY SCOUT TROOP 179 and Ashland Girl Scout Troop 1151 LO-ASHLAND-DC1X-SH-25 assisted the Portage Lake Forest Committee in planting cedar tree seedlings to aid in the town’s reforesting project to provide habitat and deer wintering cover for the local deer population. Assisting in the project were, from left, front row: Zachary Carr and Airin Harmon. Middle row: Wyatt Carr, Kassandra Nelson, Peng Cheng, Catherine Harmon, Alex Gillis and Wildlife Biologist Rich Hoppe. Back row: Tristan Perreault, Town Forester Laura Audibert, Hannah Harmon, Sherrie Harmon, Malcolm Milligan, Don Audibert and Boy Scout Leader Linda Milligan.

Approximately 230 cedar seedlings were provided by Irving Woodlands, which are joint landowners of this location. Cedars are a favorite food source for deer and will certainly be browsed, but with the current low deer populations, the deer pressure on the trees is expected to be low. This, in turn, with the help of periodic care and tending, will allow the trees to mature and provide important habitat and deer wintering cover for the future.

The Portage Lake Forest Committee is very grateful to the Scouts and their Scout Leaders for volunteering their time for this very important and worthwhile project.

The Ashland Advent Christian Church recently held a barbecue luncheon for parishioners and neighbors as a small token of appreciation for their continued support and fellowship.

The weather was gorgeous with shining sun, warm temperatures and a slight breeze keeping the bugs at bay. Pastor Bill Harris and his wife, Cheryl, hosted the luncheon, and along with some helpful volunteers, served about 50 meals to their guests.

Everyone enjoyed chatting and catching up along with a delicious meal.
