Community support provides Greater Houlton Christian Academy with a SMARTBoard

Thanks to the efforts of community members Greater Houlton Christian Academy (GHCA) recently installed its first SMARTBoard — a digital chalkboard.
“A SMARTBoard is a large interactive whiteboard that connects with the Internet,” explains Mr. John Bishop, head of school. “Our teachers have received training on its use and are looking forward to using it with their students this fall.”
Technology upgrades are a priority for GHCA beginning with a comprehensive needs assessment that was completed this spring.
“We have a number of approaches we are taking to fully implement our plan as soon as possible,” said Bishop.
In 2010, GHCA became accredited for a 10-year term by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), making it only the second Christian school in the state to become accredited. NEASC is the nation’s oldest accrediting association and is the organization that accredits public and private schools in the New England area. GHCA received ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International) accreditation at the same time, making the school dual-accredited. In addition, GHCA gained full “state approved” status by the Maine Department of Education.
Since that time GHCA has been implementing recommendations set forth by NEASC. The recommendations are based on best practices for curriculum excellence and professional development.
“We recognize the critical role technology plays in the success of our students,” explained Bishop. “We look forward to sharing our progress with the community.”
