The eighth annual Cropley Family Alex’s Lemonade Stand will be held on Saturday, June 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mars Hill IGA. It is hosted by Cathy and Jessica Cropley.

Ever since 2004, the Cropleys have hosted a lemonade stand to benefit the national charity, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, to raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer research. In 2000, Alexandra “Alex” Scott decided to host a lemonade stand at the age of 4 after being diagnosed with cancer. Four years later, the Scott family made Alex’s Lemonade Stand a national charity which has raised millions of dollars since 2004. Unfortunately, that same year, cancer took Alex’s life and she didn’t live to see what her hard work and dedication had created. The Cropleys began hosting a stand in 2004 — the only stand in Maine — because both mom and daughter believe in the work Alex started and want to see an end to this terrible form of cancer.    The Eighth Grade at Central Aroostook Junior High School held their graduation exercises on Tuesday, June 12. Following a welcome by Class President Isabelle Cadet, athletic awards were presented to the Eighth Grade baseball and softball teams by Coach Jackins and Coach Conrad.

The class prophesy was presented by Brooke Cyr, Elizabeth Gillen, Molly Anthony and Kailyb Stitham, as was a special yearbook dedication by Tori Brewer and Dayna Collins. This year’s yearbook was dedicated to Carlton Craig, an important part of the school. Carlton’s willingness to help out however he can is greatly appreciated by students, staff and community members. Thanks for all you do, Carlton.

Many academic awards were presented by the teachers. Also recognized were Students of the Month, Good Citizenship Awards and Student Council.

Following a fun slideshow, the students were presented with their Certificates of Promotion. Central Aroostook Guidance Counselor Sadie Shaw’s closing remarks told the students that “choice, not chance, determines your destiny” and to remember that they are “all capable of great things.”

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Tuesday morning, June 12, at the Aroostook Health Center. The special speaker was Rotarian Pam Townsend. Pam shared the results from the “test” that the group had done a few weeks ago. The test was a way of determining a person’s style and personality and gave the strengths and weaknesses of each. It also recommended ways for each to work on making improvements. It was a fun and eye-opening experience!
