Take Off Pounds Sensibly ME 0233, Houlton
by Lois Downing
Take Off Pounds Sensibly Chapter 0233 of Houlton met Friday, June 8 at the Aldergate building on High Street for its weekly meeting.
Diane Folsom, leader, was in charge. Fourteen TOPS were weighed and four KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly). Loser of the week was Denise Clark and runner-up was Diane Folsom.
The skinny dish, in charge of Barbara Grant, was held over. Charlotte Marley spoke on the current flag contest. Janette Nelson gave the monthly financial report.
Some of the discussion was on the workshop in Caribou June 1, which was attended by seven of our members. Charlotte Marley gave a draft of the workshop. The theme of the workshop was ‘’Sewing seeds of success.’’
Reports were given by Joanne Scott and secretary’s minutes by Brenda Lacostic. Diane introduced Margaret Hagerman who took over the program, called watching your P’s and Q’s. For the ‘’P’’ part, she said to plan your menu, use small portions with a smaller plate, cut out drinking soda, push your plate aside and leave something on it; for the Q’s, there is no quick fix for weight loss; give yourself a quiz; add a buddy to your list, keep a journal, and don’t quit.
The next meeting is June 15 at the same address. Our meetings start at 9 o’clock after weigh-in, 8:00-8:45. Nobody is weighed after 8:45 to allow time for the staff to figure their numbers. If you need more information on the chapter, please call Charlotte Marley at 757-8483 or any of the others listed above.
Come, enjoy, and get weighed. You’ll be glad you did.
Ricker Rumblings
by Lois Downing
Hello everyone! Hope all my readers are doing well. We are having a very sunny and beautiful day here in Houlton. The forecast is sunny too. Better than last week when we had days of overcast skies. We are thankful.
At the time of this writing, my neighbor Blaine Johnson is a patient at the Houlton Regional Hospital. Several days before he left he told me he has a new granddaughter, born June 4 in Portland. Congratulations to all involved. And Blaine, get better quick.
I partook of the delicious cabbage rolls that were made by my neighbor, Barbara Ganem, in the community room. Several other dishes by the committee were also available. On Tuesday of this week, a cookie swap is available.
A few of the women have formed a Ricker Plaza activity committee and are planning activities and dinners for the tenants here. The committee members are: Barbara Ganem, president; Connie Barry, secretary and Harriet Garnett and Robin Chambers. Please check the bulletin board for days and times.
The committee would like to thank those who support what we’re doing. In last week’s Ricker Rumblings, I mistakenly listed Connie Barry as one of the birthday girls. It was supposed to be Florence MacDonald. Sorry about that girls.
We will have another birthday celebration for the June birthday celebrants. On the bulletin board it is listed the date as being June 30 at 4 p.m. Newman Electric has been changing lights in the apartments for two weeks now. The lights are brighter, that’s the reason for the change and will save money in the long run.
Paul Armstrong and Joe Garnett have been busy playing their instruments. They go to Oakfield, Monticello, and other places several times a week. Good for them as they both enjoy it.
A note about angels: Make yourself familiar with the angels, and behold them frequently in spirit; for without being seen, they are present with you. (Saint Francis de Sales) Bible quote: ‘’All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness; so that one who belongsto God may be competent, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
Have a good week, one of joy and good health.
Island Falls
The Aroostook Association of the United Church of Christ held its spring meeting in Fort Fairfield with the Rev. Diane Langworthy leading the opening worship service. Attending the meeting were Candy McKellar, Riva Hawkes, and pastor, Amanda Wagner, with Candy McKellar being the moderator of the group. Guest speakers were the Rev. Darren Morgan, Maine Conference Assoc. and the Rev. Robert Grove-Markwood, president of the Bangor Seminary.
Following the meeting a supper was served by the members of the church and much fellowship enjoyed by all. Mary Lou Pomeroy and daughter, Jane Foster have been recent visitors in Island Falls and also stopped in the say hello to Riva Hawkes and Patti Hartin before returning home to Caribou. The country music held weekly at the snowmobile club house is still going strong and many people have been enjoying the singing and dancing despite traveling to and fro in the cold and rain, just glad it isn’t snow and ice. Still have quite a lot of birds around and every morning the nuthatches are at the bird feeders early to get ahead of the little red squirrel I have been seeing lately.
And, of course, the chickadees are coming too, but not so many now and have a few gold finch who also try to get ahead of the squirrels at the feeders. I don’t keep the feeders too full as I want to discourage the darn squirrels. Caught another glimpse of the fat woodchuck and this time he was out in my backyard looking for a handout. No gardens around here now that he used to feed on so maybe he will soon look for greener pastures. I still have quite a large flock of crows who congregate on my back lawn in the evening—-maybe it will keep the skunks from arriving and digging holes on my lawn when they see all the big black birds. I am now hoping to see the deer in the fall and hope they haven’t all migrated to Canada.
