ASHLAND & SACO – Clarice Elaine Winslow Weld died on May 1, 2012, at Seal Rock Healthcare in Saco, ME. She was born on January 28, 1918, in Ashland, the daughter of Smith Bailey and Ethel (Alieff) Winslow.
She graduated from Ashland Community High School as valedictorian in 1935. After attending Ricker Junior College in Houlton for a year, she transferred to Colby College, Waterville, from which she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1940. She later earned a Master’s in Education from the University of Maine in Orono in 1968. She married Ralph Emerson Hansen in 1942 in Providence, RI. Ralph died in 1955. She was widowed by Donald Weld in 1984.
Claire, as she was known to all, taught in the Mars Hill school system for a year following graduation from Colby College. She later taught at Biddeford High School for two years, and taught English at Old Orchard Beach from 1954 to 1976.
Although many students were greatly influenced by her in her 25 years of teaching and highly regarded her as a firm but fair and caring teacher, she is remembered as much for her gardening skills and her love of Travis, her Scottish Terrier (who followed two other Scotties, Jill I and Jill II). The Weld Garden was a favorite destination when the Saco Bay Gardening Club held annual garden tours, a garden featured in the Boston Globe in 2004 and in People, Places, and Plants in 2003. In earlier years, she was a devoted bridge player, having achieved Life Master status and a place in the top 50 list in Maine.
Clarice was predeceased by two brothers, Linwood and Russell; a sister, Doris; and a special niece, Dawn.
She is survived, and will be greatly missed by her son, Dale W. Hansen, New York, NY; her granddaughters, Michelle Snow, Westbrook, and Melanie Hansen, Biddeford; two great-grandsons, Finn and Eli Snow, Westbrook; a nephew, Dana S. Cameron, Ashland; a grandniece, Elaine C. Vickery, Saco; a grandnephew, Dana W. Cameron, Ashland; several other relative; and many friends.
At her request, there will be no funeral service or viewing. Burial of cremains will be in Ashland at a time to be determined. A memorial service will be held in the near future. Arrangements are by Cote Funeral Home, Saco. To send private condolences to the family go to www.cotefuneralhome.com
