LIMESTONE — U. S. News and World Report has ranked the Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM) the 38th best high school in the nation. The ranking, which includes nearly 22,000 schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia, measures how well schools prepare students for college and how well they serve disadvantaged students. U. S. News also ranked MSSM the nation’s ninth best magnet school (and the second best in New England).

Executive Director of the Maine School of Science and Mathematics Luke Shorty, center, knows that classes at the magnet school cover a multitude of topics.

“We could not be more pleased to have the hard work and dedication of our students, faculty, and staff recognized in this way,” said MSSM’s Executive Director Luke Shorty upon learning the news. “This ranking is also a powerful testament to the quality of our curriculum, and strong academic support structures, with its ability to help motivated students from disadvantaged backgrounds.”

Opened in 1995, MSSM is a  tuition-free public boarding high school that enrolls students from around the state.

“The magnet school challenges students to achieve their aspirations by fostering humanities,” school officials said, adding that the residential experience encourages personal accountability and the development of skills in relationships, healthful living, and social diversity.

Located in Limestone, MSSM also offers outreach programs including summer camps for middle school students and professional development opportunities for teachers throughout the state.
