WASHBURN NEWS

Lidstone United Methodist Church will join other United Methodists around the globe to change the world on May 19-20. The movement, referenced at www.rethinkchurch.org/changetheworld, works to connect United Methodists in service with simple acts of kindness to build community locally and fight malaria globally.
Lidstone United Methodist Church will participate by hosting a Hunger Awareness Meal at the Washburn Civic Center on Saturday, May 19, at 5 p.m. The cost for the evening is a donation of a non-perishable food item to be given to the Ecumenical Food Pantry. Participants will have a chance to experience the inequalities in the world through the distribution of the evening’s meal and there will be drama, music and plenty of fellowship. You will also have a chance to learn about many hunger relief agencies locally, nationally and internationally and how you can help.
Members and friends of Lidstone United Methodist Church are very enthusiastic about raising awareness about hunger and hunger-related issues. Change the World weekend is a wonderful opportunity to empower people of the United Methodist Church to serve beyond the church’s walls. Author visits SAD 45
SAD 45 had a special treat on April 25 as Cynthia Lord, children’s author, spoke to students from K-12. As a way of thanking librarians around the state, Cynthia held a Thanksgiving contest, picking several winning schools from the entries. The winners would be able to have her spend the day in their school with students talking about her experiences as an author.
Thanksgiving morning, SAD 45 Librarian Mrs. Londa Brown was informed the Washburn schools had won and students and teachers alike have looked forward to Lord’s visit. The youngest students loved talking about her hamster stories and enthusiastically participated with her as she read through “Hot Rod Hamster.” She gave a signed copy of the next book in the series, “Happy Birthday Hamster,” to the elementary library.
Grades 4 and 5 talked about her book “Touch Blue.” Grades 6,7 and 8 explored her Newbery Honor Book, “Rules.” High school students asked many questions about her writing career and what made her decide to become an author. Lord encouraged all of the students to read and then to write. She inspired everyone to dream, sharing practical suggestions on how to create a story line and then allow their imaginations to soar. Thank you, Cynthia Lord, for a very special day!
Thank you
Thanks to community support, Zach Maynard, one of WDHS’s seniors, will be traveling to Kansas City to attend the SkillsUSA National Convention. Recently, it was posted that he had won the gold medal in masonry in the state competition. Many people helped in this endeavor. Special thanks to the Trail Runners Snowmobile Club members who allowed Zach’s supporters to host a stew and bingo night for Zach and to the Ladies Quilting Club who gave beautiful homemade items to be sold in the auction.
Project Grad
Washburn Project Grad 2012 will continue to take donations at the bottle redemption center in Washburn through the end of May. Just let them know that you want to donate your bottles. Thank you to anyone that has given to us in the past. It is greatly appreciated.
