Learn to fly here
IN THE CITY
by Scott Wardwell
Over the last year and a half there has been an effort by multiple groups to make an airplane, along with an instructor, available in Presque Isle for those who are interested in learning to fly. I am happy to report that this service is now available.
For a couple of months, a Cessna 172 Skyhawk has been based at the Northern Maine Regional Airport for instruction and to rent. The Cessna 172 is the most popular general aviation aircraft in history with more made than any other model. It is one of the easiest to learn to fly in. Once you obtain your license it has four seats and can be used to take three of your friends or family members up for local sight-seeing rides or take it cross country for a vacation.
The Northern Maine Regional Airport is a fantastic facility to learn to fly at. First and foremost the runways are long and wide. The main runway is longer than the longest runway at the Portland Jetport. Both runways have been recently repaved and are in excellent condition.
The Fixed Based Operator (FBO) has extended hours for getting services in the early morning, evenings and on the weekends. In the event that you arrive back from your flying when the FBO is closed, there is a self serve credit card fuel pump to top your tanks off. Because of the airline operation, the air field has to be maintained to a high standard of safety including winter snow removal.
Once you have completed your flight training and are ready to take your check ride for your Private Pilot Certificate, John Trask of Arco Aviation is the local FAA flight examiner. John is a tremendous asset to the airport and draws airline pilots from around the country for their periodic check rides for proficiency.
There are several local residents who have already taken advantage of this opportunity. There are number of people in various stages of their flight instruction. In addition, some have received their Private Pilot Certificate and are moving on to the exciting world of aircraft ownership. They are joining a fortunate few who can fly directly to their desired destination on their own schedule.
