Melendez to perform at CPAC May 6

CARIBOU — Inspirational performer Tony Melendez is returning to Aroostook County for a performance at the Caribou Performing Arts Center on Sunday, May 6, at 2 p.m.

Melendez, a thalidomide baby who was born without arms, learned how to play guitar with his feet and first gained notoriety performing for Pope John Paul II in Los Angeles in 1987. The Pope hailed Melendez as a “courageous young man,” and told him, “my wish to you is to continue giving this hope to all the people.” Since that day, Melendez has toured the world spreading his inspirational story and sharing his musical talents.

Melendez first appeared in Aroostook County in 1992, more than 20 years ago. Jim Ouellette, one of the Youth Ministry Coordinators at St. Peter Chanel Parish in Van Buren, was involved with Tony’s visit back in 1992.      “Tony is an amazing performer,” Ouellette said. “He is a very engaging person and full of energy … he truly enjoys performing and the audience can feel it.”

“I am thrilled that we are able to bring him back [to Aroostook County],” he added.

Ouellette is again involved in bringing Tony Melendez to CPAC.

“Tony’s music and his story are inspirational to children and adults alike. We are involving Youth Ministries to help with the event, and look forward to a great crowd to welcome Tony back to Maine,” he said.

Tickets for the event are $12 for adults and $6 for students. Tickets are available at Fosters Mobil One Stop in Caribou, Bradley’s Citgo in Presque Isle, and Tulsa in Van Buren. Tickets will also be available through Youth Ministries at several churches throughout Aroostook County. For more information, visit www.CaribouPAC.org or www.TonyMelendez.com.
