STACYVILLE — Is this the season that the Katahdin softball takes the next step in its progression?
Coaches Terry Duffy and Phil Faulkner have good reason to believe that is precisely the case. Katahdin returns much of its starting infield from a year ago, which should provide plenty of experience and leadership on the diamond.
The Cougars’ success, however, will rest with how quickly the rookies develop into quality players.
“We have some veterans returning, but the majority of the team are rookies,” coach Terry Duffy said. “We still should be competitive and we will work hard to improve as the season progresses.”

The Cougar roster features seniors Kasey Brackett and Katarena Taylor; juniors Bailey McNally, Makayla Patterson and Ashley Randall; sophomores Maryssa McDonald, Lizzie Knowles and Brianna Majkowski; and freshmen, Taylor Cole, Stephanie Redman, Maraiah Farrington and Michelle Birmingham.
Katahdin will have a new battery as hurler Randal steps into the pitching circle this season, while Knowles will handle the catching duties. Backing up Randal are Birmingham and Majkowski.
The infield features McNally at third base; Merry at shortstop; Majkowski at second; and Patterson at first.
Katahdin opens its season on Monday, April 23 at 4 p.m. at Penobscot Valley High School.
