HOULTON, Maine — Students at Houlton High School were honored Wednesday evening with the school’s annual Awards Evening for National Honor Society and the Principal’s Award ceremony.
“As I prepared my opening remarks for tonight, I hoped to give you some thought on membership in the National Honor Society,” said Bonnie Tidd, NHS advisor. “What does it really mean to you to be a member of the Houlton High School National Honor Society? The purpose of this organization is to create enthusiasm for scholarship; to stimulate a desire to render service; and to promote leadership and good character of students.”
Tidd told the new inductees that membership into the NHS was both an honor and a commitment that comes with great responsibility.
“Membership is a privilege,” she said. “It is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Once selected, members have a responsibility to demonstrate those qualities. You are required and expected to exhibit excellence in academics and leadership.”
She challenged both the outgoing members and the newcomers to think about what their inclusion into the NHS will mean to them.
“Is it just another line on your résumé?” she asked. “Will it simply be an avenue for prestige among your peers? Is it simply a way to gain parent or teacher approval? Or is it and will it be about the values you hold?”
Eighteen new members were elected to Houlton High School’s NHS class. They are: Cordell Beaton, Marina Cameron, Allyson Carmichael, Emily Hanson, Victoria Hanson, Rebekah Holmes, Dylan Howland, Erynne Howland, Ethan Morse, Ashley Grass, Crystal Nason, Emilie Newman, Melissa Peabody, Emma Reed, Maguerite Russell, Alaina Stewart, Mikaela Tuttle and Frankie White.
