HOULTON — The Millar Civic Center was the place to be over the weekend as the 2012 Southern Aroostook Trade Show entertained crowds on both Saturday and Sunday.
Jane Torres, executive director for the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce, said she was amazed at how “smoothly” the event went, considering it was her first trade show as the Chamber’s director.
“I think the vendors were all very happy with the trade show,” Torres said. “Our attendance was down a little bit because of the nice weather, but vendors were selling items.”

The trade show has become an annual Rite of Spring, providing attendees with a wealth of information on topics such as local banking, satellite television, artwork, alternative heating sources, all-terrain and recreational vehicles, garden and farming equipment.
Reggie Dow of Dow’s Market was one of the more popular booths for people as he passed out free pizza samples. On Saturday alone, Dow made 45 pizzas. On Sunday, the second annual Pizza Challenge was held. This year the coveted title of Best Pizza went to Monticello Country Store.
The “Best in Show” award went to Up There Woodturners for their interactive display and upbeat presentations throughout the weekend, Torres said.
Since it was her first trade show as the executive director, Torres said she was studying what worked and what needed improvement so that next year’s event can be even better.
