CLAYTON, Shirley J. (Alward), 86, ASHLAND, at Presque Isle, April 6, 2012. There will be a graveside service at the Ashland Municipal Cemetery at 11 a.m. on July 3. Arrangements in care of Stimson-Ouellette Funeral Home, Ashland.

    ASHLAND – Shirley J. (Alward) Clayton, 86, BELOVED mother and grandmother, died at the Presque Isle Rehab and Nursing Center on April 6, 2012, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was born at Portage Lake, Nov.  6, 1925, the daughter of E. Ray and Grace (Daggett) Alward.

    Shirley was a graduate of Ashland Community High School and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Ashland. She was an avid Bingo player and liked to play Charlemagne with her many friends at the Circle in Ashland and also loved to do crossword puzzles. She loved to spend time with her family, go shopping and especially helping archive the genealogy and history of the family. She enjoyed working on her computer helping her daughter Sally to put her mother Grace’s, 37 diaries on disk. She enjoyed playing guitar and singing old country songs with family and friends. Shirley will be remembered for her generosity and loving ways and for her great sense of humor. She will be sadly missed by her family and many, many friends especially for her quick smile and those expressive eyes.

    Shirley is survived by one son, Daniel Sylvester and his wife, June (Nadeau) of Warrinton, Missouri, and their three children, Joshua Sylvester and his wife, Jamie, their children, Dahlia, Aurellia and Aurora from Missouri; Joy (Sylvester) Olson and her husband, Nathan and their children, Noah, Lillian Grace, Titus, London and Parker from Missouri; and Caleb Sylvester and his wife, Beth and their daughter, Clara and Wyatt from Florida; three daughters Rebecca Ann (Picard) Legassie of Caribou, her daughters, Kim (Duprey) Malinowski and her husband, Shawn of Connecticut, and Kim’s four children, Hope Ann Tompson and her husband, Robert, Lucas Malinowski, Zechariah Malinowski and his wife, Holly, Clayton Malinowski; daughter, Virginia McKenzie of Florida,, and Virginia’s child, Robert McKenzie; a very special great-grandson who was raised by Rebecca; Sally (Sylvester) Ferris and her husband, Keith of Presque Isle and their son, Colin Ferris and wife, Michelle; Sheryl (Sylvester) Pelkey and her husband, Kenneth of Caribou and their two children, Steven Pelkey; Stacy Pelkey and partner, Stephanie, their children, Kaiden, Brenden and Eli. She is also survived by a stepson, Donald Clayton and his wife, Debbie and their children, Amanda and Brittany; many special nieces and nephews; and very special friends, Middi Sutherland, Salina O’Clair, Arlene St. Peter and Olene Eastman.

    Shirley was predeceased by her parents; a son, Robert Alward; her ex-husband, Omar Clayton; three brothers, Floyd and his wife, Gladys (McGowan) Alward, Clyde Alward, A. Keith and his wife, Iris (Bailey) Alward; three sisters, Cecile (Alward) Bouchard and her husband, Rene of Alta (Alward) Mosher and her husband, Myron of, and Avis (Alward) Hayward and her husband, G. Halbert.

    There will be no calling hours. There will be a graveside service at the Ashland Municipal Cemetery at 11 a.m. on July 3, 2012. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate her life at the Ashland VFW Le Blanc-Junkins Post 9699 on July 3, 2012, from 2 to 4 p.m. The Ashland Ladies Auxiliary will provide a service which she would have enjoyed very much.

    The family would like to thank the Presque Isle Rehab & Nursing Center and Dr. David Jones for the wonderful and compassionate care they rendered. Most of all, they would like to thank the PEC unit at the Presque Isle Rehab & Nursing Center for loving mom and taking such great care of her. She loved all of them and each one of the ladies was very special to her.
