UMPI softball drops openers
ORONO — The Thomas College softball team recorded two non-conference wins 12-0 and 6-0 against the University of Maine Presque Isle Saturday night at Mahaney Dome on the campus of University of Maine Orono as the Owls fall to 0-4 to start the season.
Desiree Smith of Thomaston was the top performer for the Owls on the night recording two of their three hits.
In the first game, Thomas came out strong scoring six runs in the first two innings and never looking back to win in four innings.
In the second game, both teams were held scoreless until the fourth and fifth innings when the Terriers grabbed four of their six runs on the night.
Pitcher Lainey Herring of Houlton went to two and two thirds strong innings for the Owls only giving up one hit and one earned run.
A day earlier, also at UMO, Leah Jackson’s three-run, walk-off blast punctuated Maine Maritime’s softball sweep of UMPI. Her third shot of the day, and second in the nightcap, made it 11-2 ending the game via mercy rule.
The Mariners knocked off the Owls 8-0 in the opener.
