LIMESTONE, Maine — No one was injured on March 12 when the top of a U-Haul truck colided with the drive-up roof of Katahdin Trust Company’s Limestone branch; company officials estimate that damages could easily exceed $10,000.

Canopy repairs began on Tuesday morning, and Senior Vice President of Marketing and Communications for Katahdin Trust Company Vicki Smith said on Monday that the company hopes to restore the branch’s external services within two or three weeks.

“The damage is pretty extensive; we’re hoping that we’ll be able to complete [repairs] in two weeks, but could take up to three weeks, depending on the extent of the damages workers uncover when they begin [reconstruction],” Smith said, adding that the canopy over one drive-up teller lane and one drive-up ATM lane will have to be removed and re-built.

“We’ll be working diligently to restore services to the Limestone area,” Smith added. “No one was hurt, and that’s the critical part.”

The accident occured at around 5:30 p.m. on March 12; 38-year-old Limestone resident David McMahon was having difficulty backing the small U-Haul out of the bank’s east-facing exit of the parking lot, according to Limestone Police Chief Stacey Mahan.

Mahan said the driver thought he could probably maneuver the truck around the canopy’s overhang to utilize the parking lot’s north-facing exit, “but he didn’t quite make it.”

Limestone Police Officer Cory Larlee responded to the scene and filed the accident report.

A&L Construction of Presque Isle has been selected to implement the repairs.

Smith appologized for the the inconvenience to Limestone customers while repairs are under way; Katahdin Trust Company is the only bank in the small town.

According to Smith, the bank will reemburse Limestone’s bank customers for any fees they might be be charged for using an alternate ATM while the Limestone branch’s facilities are being repaired.

“They just need to let us know,” Smith said.

The bank’s internal services remain open for business during their normal hours: the lobby is open from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Friday.

Katahdin Trust Company has branches in Limestone’s neighboring communities of Fort Fairfield, Caribou and Van Buren.
