The very day Lucy Beaulieu turned 98 years old, she was presented with Limestone’s Boston Post Cane by Town Manager Donna Bernier. Beaulieu is now recognized as Limestone’s oldest citizen.
While her birthday and the cane presentation were both on March 9, Lucy’s birthday party didn’t come until the following day.
Daughter-in-law Doreen Beaulieu said that over 40 family members came up from as far away as Portland to celebrate Lucy’s birthday with her; Lucy of course brought her new Boston Cane to the celebration.
“Lucy enjoys life to the fullest,” Doreen said. “She likes to crochet, do word searches, play bingo and she enjoys visits from her family and friends.”
Strictly speaking, Lucy has plenty of family to keep her company. She and her late husband, Lazare, have eight children — Florent, Beatrice, Raymond, Frances, Velma, Peter, Paul and Patricia — as well as over fifty grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Lucy is happily enjoying being 98 years old, and while she never thought she’d receive the Boston Post Cane, she says that receiving it is an honor.
Lucy was born on Marcy 9, 1914 in Drummond, N.B. to Jane and Joseph Johndro; they moved to Limestone when Lucy was 16.
Lucy’s always been a part of a farming family and was still working on the harvester at age 80.
She currently resides at the Caribou Nursing and Rehab Center.
The previous guardian of Limestone’s Boston Cane was Pearl Terrier, who passed away on Dec. 20, 2011.
