The Houlton 5-6 grade girl’s Aroostook Youth Basketball League team captured another tournament championship in Hampden.
The Houlton girls edged Brewer, 37-30, to take the title.
Brewer held a 16-13 opening lead, which led to a 20-19 halftime advantage. The Houlton girls outscored Brewer, 11-1 in the third en route to the win.
Kolleen Bouchard pumped in a game-high 25 points, with 15 coming in the first half of play. Aspen Flewelling scored 10 points and Kristen Graham added a basket.
The girls played three pool games before the pairings were decided for the playoffs.
In their opening pool game against Hermon, the Houlton girls took a 17-5 halftime lead behind Bouchard’s seven first-half points (11 total) and Graham’s six (10 total) to take a 33-13 win.
Tyra Gentle and Rebecca Mooers each added four points, while Flewelling and Alexis Miller had a basket apiece.
In their second game, the Houlton girls overtook Glenburn, 38-21.
The Houlton girls led 28-12 after the first half, as Bouchard had 10 of her game-high 12 points and Graham tossed in eight of her 10 points. Carolyn Mooers finished with six points, while R. Mooers tallied five points. Flewelling added three and Gentle two more.
In their last pool game, Houlton defeated Brewer, 45-32. The game was close at halftime with Houlton leading 23-19 before outscoring Brewer, 22-13 over the second half.
Graham scored 20 points, 10 in both halves, while Bouchard had eight points in each half. Flewelling finished with seven and Gentle two points.
In the quarterfinal, Houlton streaked ahead of Hermon 18-7 in the first half to win again, 38-20.
Bouchard led the team with 11 points, while Graham posted eight; Claire Gilpatrick, seven; Gentle, six; C. Mooers, Flewelling and Miller all had two points.
In the semifinals, Houlton overwhelmed Fredericton, 44-26. The Houlton girls took a comfortable, 30-8, halftime lead, moving to the championship round.
Graham and Bouchard both knocked down 14 points, while Flewelling netted eight; C. Mooers, six and Gentle, two.
