CARIBOU — The high school basketball season has officially wrapped up with the playing of the 22nd annual Aroostook County Senior All-Star Classic on March 6 at Caribou High School.
The top senior players from Katahdin to Fort Kent were invited for the fun-filled scrimmages, consisting of two 20-minute halves.
In the girls’ game Team Heliconia (pink) jumped out to an early first-half lead, and led all the way to post an 81-59 victory over Team Jade (green).
Fort Kent’s Sam Carapellucci scored 19 points and Houlton’s Amanda Fogarty scored 14 to pace the winners. Rachel Grew and Victoria McIntyre of Central Aroostook scored nine and eight respectively, and Ariana Babineau of Easton and Kayla Richards of Presque Isle also scored eight each.
Amanda Hotham of Fort Fairfield led Team Jade with 15 points, Annie Collins of Caribou had 12, Ashlie Wilson of Van Buren scored 10, and Anna Paradis of Ashland contributed eight.
Ron Ericson coached the pink team and Larry Worcester coached the green team.
In the boys’ game, Team Charcoal (gray) trailed at the half, 39-37, but took control midway in the second frame and pulled away to a 94-79 victory over Team Sapphire (blue), in a game that featured 14 three-pointers.
For the winners, Brendan York of Central Aroostook and Matt Deschenes of Madawaska each had 15 points to lead the way. Micah Wiley of Greater Houlton Christian Academy had 14 and Chase Chandler of Washburn scored 13.
For the team in blue, the Presque Isle trio of Andrew Kofstad, Matt Eager and Wilder York had 14, 13 and 13 to lead the team. Curtis Bouchard of Fort Kent also added 12.
Tim Prescott coached the team in blue and Bill McAvoy coached the gray team.
The Maine Dance Academy provided halftime entertainment in both games, including a flash mob dance at the half of the boys’ contest, which featured more than 50 dancers.
