New Sweden and Caribou – Linwood Storm Holmquist, 87, of New Sweden and Caribou passed quietly in his sleep on Sunday, March 11, 2012. He was born on the farm in Westmanland on May 14, 1924. He was the son of Waldo and Gerda (Storm) Holmquist.
Linwood was born and brought up on the family farm in Westmanland. He later farmed the same land as his dad before moving his family to New Sweden. His career work was with the Central Aroostook Soil and Water Conservation Service where he served as an Conservation Technician and Construction Inspector. After his retirement, he worked as a bus driver for the New Sweden School Department. He was a life-long member of the Evangelical Covenant Church of New Sweden.
Linwood was a veteran and spent time in the Philippines and Korea. Being a part of the military was very important to him. He was a member of both the Perkins-Plourde American Legion in Stockholm and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Caribou.
Linwood was devoted to his family. He was married for 58 years to the late Geneva (Rackliffe) Holmquist who predeceased him in 2006. He is survived by his children, Larry Holmquist and his wife, Rachel of Saco, Judy Holmquist of Caribou, Nancy Holmquist Roble of New Sweden and Kris Holmquist of Caribou. He had four grandchildren, Mark Holmquist and his wife, Devra of E. Waterboro, Melanie Weiss and her husband, David of Ridgefield, CT, Matthew Lajoie and his wife, Ashley of Lexington, SC and Niklas Roble of New Sweden. He had three great-grandchildren, Andrew and Audrey Holmquist and Gabriela Weiss. He is also survived by one sister, Dorothy Tomlinson and her husband, Philip of Caribou. He had many nieces and nephews. He enjoyed a special friendship with Nason Donahue of New Sweden. He was also predeceased by a daughter, Coleen Holmquist Lajoie and a son-in-law, Keith Roble.
A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2012, 2 p.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church on West Road in New Sweden. The Rev. T. Daniel Clayborne will officiate. The family welcomes all to stay for visitation and fellowship immediately following in the Fogelin Fellowship Hall. Memorial gifts can be given in Linwood’s memory to the church’s Memorial Fund.
