115 Years Ago: March 11, 1897

• The village schools commenced on Monday with such a very large attendance in all the grades that the seating capacity is not sufficient to accommodate the pupils and it has been found necessary to improvise several seats to meet the present emergencies. Miss Marian Littlefield, greatly to the regret of the little folks, is compelled through illness to abandon her work for the present and her place is filled by Miss Edith Holmes.

100 Years Ago: March 7, 1912

• The Caribou High School basketball team defeated the team from Presque Isle High School Thursday night at the Opera House by a score of 22-16.

• J.B. Lyon, one of our prosperous young farmers, has purchased a Maxwell car from E.J. Briggs.

• The office of the Caribou Municipal Court was moved Saturday from the rooms over H.O. Spencer’s Jewelry Store to rooms over S.W. Collins and Son’s grocery store.

• Miss Hilma Ulrick of New Sweden came down Monday night to play basketball and returned home Tuesday.

85 Years Ago: March 10, 1927

• Louis Solomon has purchased the business of the Caribou Ice Company from his father, Herbert Solomon.

75 Years Ago: March 11, 1937

• Tuesday of last week the mothers of the pupils of the West Road School in New Sweden took possession of the schoolhouse at the close of the afternoon session and were soon ready to serve sandwiches, cake and coffee to the children and their teacher, Miss Helen Erickson. Miss Erickson, as well as the children, enjoyed having her birthday celebrated in this way.

•  Miss Eva Smith and Dulcie Boone are spending a week in New York City.

• Sunday was such a disagreeable day, especially in the forenoon that no church services were held in New Sweden.

• Wilson C. Piper won second prize Tuesday evening in the Hallowell Prize Speaking Contest, an annual event at Colby College, open to men students. Mr. Piper is a sophomore at the college.

50 Years Ago: March 8, 1962

• Peter Kelley, 6-foot,3-inch, 210-pound Harvard University junior from Caribou, tied the individual performance for one-game by a Harvard player this year when he threw in 29 points against Pennsylvania. Kelley’s effort fell just four points shy of the all-time Harvard one game scoring mark of 33 points. Kelley leads Crimson shooters with a .493 field goal percentage mark and is third in scoring with a 13.4 average.

• Nearly 800 University of Maine students have been named to the Dean’s List following the recently completed fall semester. Students from this area include: Herman Carlstrom, Stockholm; Sharon Estey, Caribou; Sondra Holmes, Caribou; Gail Kelley, Caribou; and John Lagerstrom, Caribou.

• March came in like a roaring lion, keeping the snow plows going day and night, blowing down a barn on the Gregory Plourde farm in Stockholm, and bringing some much needed snow. Several Stockholm families are without water due to frozen pipes and bare ground.

• Bill Spreng of Caribou who was selected for the All-Tournament first team at Bangor, and Viking’s Dave Delaney and Ron Ouellette, who were named to the second tournament team, won identical positions on the annual All-Aroostook teams.
