Coach Dwyer’s legacy

To the editor:
Reading John White’s article this past week on good sportsmanship brought back a fond memory of the late Wayne Dwyer. As most people know, Wayne coached Little League for many years in the town of Linneus. When my young twins were playing, I attended a home game. As the visiting team came up to bat, our youngsters began heckling with “batter, batter, batter.” Wayne stopped them immediately and told them we would not be doing that. When the boys brought up that this team had done it to us he replied, “I don’t care what they do … we play like gentlemen in this town.”
I was impressed. I don’t know if other coaches have sportsmanship rules … I would say not, since I just attended a tournament game … but  even children as young as grammar school can be taught manners. My children have been grown for many years and are now raising their own youngsters, but the rules taught them by a coach who taught character along with baseball will not be forgotten.
