NEWFIELD — The Board of the 19th Century Willowbrook Village has announced that, after a national search, it has hired John Michalowski, Jr. as its new director.
John Michalowski, a resident of Presque Isle, was described by Doug King, president of the Willbrook Board of Trustees, as a “visionary, energetic and dynamic.”
“John has a broad background in museum- and history-related activities, business, architecture and education,” said King — all areas that will help Michalowski in his new position.
Michalowski received his education from the University of Arizona, George Washington University and the University of Maine. He has been involved with ground-breaking innovations in the presentation of museum exhibits, programs and development. He is also a professional photographer and published writer.
Michalowski believes that a successful museum must have a well-defined message, innovative programming for children and adults, a caring staff, quality facilities, community outreach and, most importantly, exceptional exhibits that capture the interest and excite the visitor. He is committed to further developing Willowbrook Village to enhance the museum’s value to members, donors, visitors and the community alike.
“The Board feels his museum vision and diverse background will greatly benefit the museum’s mission and help secure its financial foundation for the future at this pivotal time of its existence,” said King.
In accepting the position, Michalowski said, “I appreciate the opportunity to be part of Willowbrook’s future and to assist the Board of Trustees in the continued development of this special and high-quality, historic museum village.”
“Willowbrook is a true gem that enriches all who partake of its treasures. I look forward to being part of enhancing that experience and invite the community to join me,” said Michalowski, who will assume his duties beginning in April.
Michalowski and his wife, Ellen, have three children. He has been involved in community activities since he and his family moved to Presque Isle from Arizona about 12 years ago.
Willowbrook was founded in 1970 by Donald King, Sr., who had a vision and a passion to preserve history and show how life was actually lived in 19th century rural southern Maine. King purchased two early 1800s Newfield homesteads, both now on the National Register of Historic Places, to display artifacts. Other buildings were constructed as more artifacts were acquired. King died in 1985.
Willowbrook has been a nonprofit corporation 501(c)3 since 1980 and relies heavily on financial support from its members and the community, from individuals committed to preserving history, and from foundation grants. For more information, visit www.willowbrookmuseum.org.
